The Importance of Personal Development in Making Money
|
You're probably wondering why a site which is predominantly about making money and becoming better off has a section on personal development. But improving yourself isn't just highly relevant to making money, it is an integral part of the process. Most people who visit my site are interested in the idea of making money online. This is very easy to do. Take, for example, advertising programmes. What could be easier than spending half an hour signing up and adding banners to your site, then sitting back and watching your earnings go up as people click? But there is a great deal of difference between earning some money and earning significant amounts of money, and the difference lies in the skill of the entrepreneur.

Sure, some people knock up a site, stick advertising of some form on it and through sheer dumb luck the money starts rolling in. But these people are definitely in the minority. Less than 1 percent. Those people who are making a reasonable income (by which I mean, enough to make a difference in paying the bills) are those which possess certain qualities. Perhaps they had the natural ability already, or at least the seeds of it, but for most people the knack of generating money was learnt through working hard at their personal development. So what are the traits you need to learn if you want to be successful too?
Motivation – you need to have the drive to see your ideas through. Don't just read about earning money through blogs, e-books or setting up your own business – at some point you need to bite the bullet and actually do it. It sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised how many people fall at this first hurdle.
Perseverance – this one ties in with motivation. For the vast majority, making money will not happen instantly. It may be weeks or even months before you start seeing a return on the time and/or money you have invested so the early stages can be quite demoralising. A lot of people just don't have the dedication needed to continue with their idea long enough to start seeing a return, let alone seeing big money rolling in.
Self discipline – again, this ties in with the previous qualities. Once you're earning a little money you are going to need to spend time building on that success. It's very easy to become distracted. By the time you've stared at our computer screen for a bit, succumbed to the temptation to read your favourite news website or forum and got up to make yourself a snack, you may find that you don't have time to actually do any work. Self discipline is particularly important if your money making venture is not a full time career, for example if you are employed or a full time parent, as you wont have much time to dedicate to it in the first place. Lose the distractions!
Creativity – yep, this is important too. The ability to think laterally (or 'outside the box' if you want to use irritating business speak) is important in any money making venture. You are probably going to want to come up with a fairly original niche, product or service rather than entering an already over-saturated market. Use an existing idea as your inspiration by all means, but make sure you build on it and make it your own or you will never be able to beat the competition.
Adaptability- Markets change. The internet changes. Peoples' needs change. You need to be adaptable or you may find your source of income will one day dry up. Being open to change also stops you missing opportunities which could potentially earn you more money.
So can anyone learn these skills? Honestly, no. Personal development is something which requires a little motivation and drive to begin with and there will be many people who just can't be bothered. But if you really want to be a success, then your chances are certainly very good.
